New Aesthetic Report Findings Show An Increase Of Male Patients

The report predicts the global male aesthetics market to grow with a CAGR of 7.3% over the forecast period of 2018-2024.

The aesthetics industry is seeing a rise in the number of male patients seeking non-invasive treatments and injectables to look relaxed and refreshed. According to “The Future of Aesthetics” global trends report from Allergan Aesthetics which we covered late 2022, some of the key drivers for this trend include the need to look fresh, fit, and sharp for work, wider coverage of aesthetic treatments for men, less stigma associated with aesthetic routines, increased awareness and availability of procedures, and the increasing number of male celebrities who were open about their enhancements.

A recent report on the male aesthetics market (which included data from companies such as Allergan, Galderma, Alma Lasers, Lumenis and more) listed as Global Industry Analysis, Trends, Market Size, and Forecasts up to 2024 revealed that about 52% of male patients consider their looks to be important, and around 29% touch up their looks throughout the day. This indicates that many male patients are starting to value their appearance more than previously, and indicates a CAGR of 7.3% over the forecast period of 2018-2024.

So which treatments are the most popular?

Anti-wrinkle injectable treatments remain the most popular and most-requested aesthetic treatment for men, with over 265,000 botulinum toxin treatments administered to men in 2020, according to a statistics report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). However, male patients may require more dosage than women due to having more muscle mass in the forehead and brows.

Hair restoration is also among the most popular treatments that appeal to men, with baldness, thinning hair, and a receding hairline being significant aesthetic concerns. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) remains one of the most popular hair transplant procedures. However, many male patients are also seeking minimally or non-invasive treatments for hair restoration, such as the use of TGA-approved medications, microneedling, and scalp micro-pigmentation.

Dermal fillers are popular among men for restoring volume loss and softening folds and wrinkles, resulting in a more refreshed and youthful look. Non-surgical jawline contouring using fillers (and other treatments) is also significantly showing in popularity amongst male patients. Men are opting towards these treatments to enforce a strong, well-defined jawline, a facial feature that is documented in research to be linked to perceived masculinity upon the observing eye.

Men are also interested in hair removal treatments, with some seeking to reduce extra hair on their chest, back, and legs. Laser or light-based hair removal treatments provide an effective and long-term outcome, targeting hair follicles and inhibiting hair regrowth.

Body shaping and fat reduction treatments, such as Cryolipolysis are also rising in popularity among men. The 2021 consumer survey from the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) reported that about 77% of respondents were bothered by excess fat on any part of their body.

The male aesthetics market is experiencing growth due to several factors such as increased awareness, acceptance, and accessibility of male-oriented cosmetic procedures. However, one significant factor that hinders market growth is the high cost of treatments. The current generation is heavily influenced by social media, which emphasises the importance of maintaining a youthful appearance due to the constant sharing of photos. This trend is expected to create more opportunities for the male aesthetics market in the future.
