SPA+CLINIC’s Top 10 Highlights of 2018

As does every year, this one has flashed by even faster than usual, and what a year it has been – not just for SPA+CLINIC but for this incredible industry we call our own. We’ve experienced so many exciting developments, fascinating new studies and research, and been introduced to countless wonderful new brands. Not to mention an entire rebrand for both our online and quarterly print platforms!

SPA+CLINIC will be bidding you Adieu for the holidays from December 19th. Being our last week before the break, we’re feeling a little reminiscent, so we thought we’d take a moment to reflect on the year gone by and highlight the 10 most popular stories, trends and developments of the year:

  3. Are Breast Implants Making Women Sick?
Channel 10 news program The Project gave us a segment that interviewed a range of women who believe their breast implants (some performed 10+ years ago) were causing serious ailments including rheumatoid arthritis and thyroid disease, and also uncovered various online chat rooms where tens of thousands of women reported similar stories.

Sydney launched its first hairdresser-meets-clinic-meets-bar, generating a whole lot of buzz and introduced us to the concept of all-under-one-roof cocktails & treatments.
  5. New Legislation Could See Mass Cosmetic Nurse Job Loss
As the number of random raids and illegal drug busts grow, the crackdown on ‘cosmetic cowboys’ intensifies. There was noticeable movement on legislation this year and several parliamentary meetings and proposals – the most prominent being the proposed amendment of the Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act 1966, which would mean huge changes for cosmetic medicine, practitioners and potentially widespread loss of jobs.

One of our most exciting moments of the year was our September website relaunch, where we introduced a gorgeous new aesthetic and range of functionalities to the website. We felt that, with the upcoming celebration of SPA+CLINIC’s 20th anniversary (2019) it was time for a little facelift!
  9. Laser Clinics Launches New Filler Treatment
In October, Laser Clinics rolled out a brand new treatment throughout their 110+ clinics called Micro Filler, which focuses on brightening the complexion and boosting hydration. It uses a uniquely formulated hyaluronic-acid based gel that is administered evenly across face, neck and décolletage using a unique delivery device.
  10. Class Action Approved Against The Cosmetic Institute
After a tumultuous year and countless cases of post-surgical complications, this month the Supreme Court gave the green light for up to 1000 women to take class against The Cosmetic Institute, a clinic that has been making headlines as a ‘boob factory’ since last year. President of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons named it a landmark day for patient safety.

From the entire team at SPA+CLINIC, we thank you for your support this year and wish you a safe, happy and wonderful holiday. We look forward to seeing you bright eyed and bushy tailed from January 7th!
