According to Dr Verdian, we are already seeing a shift from reactive, restorative care to proactive, preventative, and regenerative treatments, making dentistry more efficient, personalised, and minimally invasive.
Mouth microbiome analysis, robotic assistants, and 3D-printed implants are already transforming dentistry—but according to Dr Gamer Verdian, the tech-powered future of oral health is only just beginning.
“One of the most exciting advancements is stem cell therapy, which could eventually replace fillings, implants, and even dentures by regrowing natural teeth,” says Dr Verdian. He points to recent studies from Harvard (2023) and Kyoto University (2024), which highlight the groundbreaking potential of regenerative techniques to transform oral health.
The technological advancements
“Scientists have successfully used stem cells from dental pulp to regenerate dentin, enamel, and even complete tooth structures in animal models, and clinical trials of these stem-cell based treatments could see these treatments available in mainstream dentistry in just a few years. Technology is evolving rapidly and, in the next decade, gene therapy applications could help prevent tooth decay and gum disease at a cellular level.”
“Machine learning models are already outperforming human dentists in detecting cavities, bone loss, and oral diseases through radiograph analysis,” says Dr Verdian. “AI systems can analyse thousands of scans in seconds, increasing accuracy and speed but it can also track patient data over time to predict oral health risks, helping dentists take preventative action before problems even arise. We are hurtling full-speed towards moving away from needles and drills.”
Dr Verdian, CEO and co-founder of D-Group—the parent company of Dental 99, Dental Lounge, and Sydney Implant Institute—has led the group’s rapid expansion in a fiercely competitive industry through a relentless focus on innovation.
Dr Verdian shares his insights.
What is your secret to success in business?
Patient experience is everything and that is our core focus! Patients expect more than just a treatment – they want transparency, convenience and personalised care. We changed the game by investing in patient-centric systems and leveraging technology to create a seamless service, improving comfort, access, affordability and efficiency.
Is AI replacing healthcare professionals?
Technology isn’t replacing healthcare professionals, it’s augmenting their capabilities. Smart entrepreneurs leverage AI to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability. Options like chatbots, automated follow-ups and virtual assistants improve the patient experience and reduce administrative burdens. Predictive healthcare models in which AI can analyse patient data to personalise treatment plans will revolutionise our ability to enhance patient care and take a truly preventative approach.
How do you continue to lead with innovation?
I never stop learning! The smartest entrepreneurs are lifelong learners – immerse yourself in knowledge, and you’ll make better decisions, faster. You must constantly evolve, read, and adapt to stay ahead. Books like ‘The Lean Startup’, ‘Who Not How’, ‘The Hard Thing About Hard Things’, and ‘Zero to One’ offer invaluable lessons. It’s also important to attend industry conferences and stay updated on cutting-edge innovations. And find yourself a mentor – they can save you years of trial and error.
What is the best investment you have made?
Undoubtedly, it is hiring the best people as early as possible. It’s a critical mistake to wait too long to hire top talent and to try and do everything yourself. If you surround yourself with A-players you set the culture and trajectory of your business. As the leader, you don’t need to be the smartest person in the room but you do need to assemble the best team possible if you want to succeed. Take a leap of faith and hire the right people because that’s what enables growth.
