Fresh Face Skin Founder Amelia Goff shares her reasons on why educating your team is crucial to your business’s success.
When I started Fresh Face Skin eight years ago, I stepped into business ownership with a clear vision—to create a team-focused environment rooted in education, growth, and open communication. I knew from experience that a thriving team equals a thriving business. In an industry where our team delivers the client experience, investing in their development is not just an option; it’s essential for long-term success.
Why Team Investment Matters
As an appointment-based industry, the success of our business depends on our team’s ability to deliver exceptional treatments consistently. To grow, our team must be confident, competent, and continuously learning. This requires strategic planning, structured training, and a commitment to development.
In-House Training
To ensure a consistent client experience, we conduct regular in-house training. Our dedicated in-house dermal trainer observes each team member every 4-6 weeks, assessing techniques, refining skills, and identifying areas for support. These observations aren’t about critique; they’re about growth and celebration—acknowledging strengths while providing guidance for improvement.

Training should never feel intimidating. That’s why we focus on interactive, engaging sessions that cater to different learning styles. Building trust between trainers and therapists is key, ensuring that training is not just informative but also enjoyable and empowering.
The Power of One-on-One Communication
One of the first things to suffer in a growing business is communication. Without clear, open dialogue, teams can feel disconnected, and business growth can stagnate. That’s why we prioritise weekly 15-minute one-on-one sessions between team members and managers.
These brief but impactful meetings:
- Provide a space for challenges and wins to be discussed.
- Encourage reflection and problem-solving.
- Strengthen trust and rapport between leadership and staff.
Regular check-ins keep communication fluid, fostering a team culture where everyone feels heard and supported.
Monthly Training & Team Culture Building
Once a month, we hold a team training session, focusing on skill enhancement, business growth, and collaboration. Being in a busy salon means we rarely have downtime to reflect together, so these sessions allow us to align our treatment approaches, refine our services, and strengthen our team dynamic.
A strong team isn’t just about skills—it’s about culture and connection. Investing in regular training fosters a collaborative mindset, ensuring that everyone is on the same page and working towards the same vision.
Outsourcing Education
While in-house training is invaluable, bringing in external educators and attending industry seminars provides a fresh perspective. Investing in external education exposes the team to new trends, technologies, and best practices, keeping us at the forefront of the industry.
Taking the team out of the salon for conferences or seminars isn’t just about learning—it’s about resetting, re-energising, and creating a better team culture. When the team grows together, they perform better together.
Annual Team Planning & Reflection
Each year, we dedicate a full day away from the salon to reflect, plan, and strengthen our team bond. This day is designed to:
- Celebrate achievements and milestones.
- Set goals for the year ahead.
- Engage in team-building activities that reinforce connection and collaboration.
This annual team day is an investment in morale, vision, and motivation—ensuring that we enter each new year refreshed, aligned, and ready to grow.
A Strong Team Creates a Strong Business
The energy within a business is felt by both the team and the clients. When a business prioritizes its team, that positive energy radiates throughout the entire client experience.
Investing in your team is about more than training or skills development—it’s about creating an environment where people feel valued, supported, and excited to grow. When your team feels invested in, they invest back into your business through their performance, their client interactions, and their loyalty.
As business owners, our role isn’t just to lead—it’s to uplift, educate, and empower. When you invest in your team, you’re not just shaping a better business—you’re shaping a better future for your brand, your clients, and your industry. Trust me, it’s the best investment you’ll ever make.
